Before Flight

Before the call:

1. Gather Your Information Before Calling

To make the briefing efficient, have the following information ready:

  1. Aircraft Type & Tail Number (e.g., “Cessna 172, N123AB”) 
  2. VFR or IFR Flight Plan (if filing) 
  3. Departure Airport & Time (UTC preferred) 
  4. Destination Airport & Alternate (if applicable) 
  5. Route of Flight (direct, via VORs, airways, etc.) 
  6. Cruise Altitude 
  7. Estimated Time Enroute 
  8. Special Requests (e.g., NOTAM check for a specific airport)

Calling:

Dial the Flight Service Station (FSS)

• Call 1-800-WX-BRIEF (1-800-992-7433).

• This connects you to Leidos Flight Service (formerly Lockheed Martin FSS).

Request the Type of Briefing

Once connected, you’ll be asked what kind of briefing you need:

A. Standard Briefing (Full Preflight Info)

B. Outlook Briefing (For Flights More Than 6 Hours Away)

                C. Abbreviated Briefing (For Updates)

 

Listen and Take Notes

 

  1. Write down key details (e.g., SIGMETs, METARs, PIREPs, active TFRs).
  2. Ask for clarifications if needed.
  3. If filing a VFR Flight Plan, provide your ETA, fuel on board, and souls on board.

5. Confirm and Close the Call

Say:
