Before Start – When battery switch is first turned on, listen for the turn coordinator spin up, should sound smooth.
After Start – Suction page should read normal during engine run up. Check that both pumps are operating.
Magnetic Compass – Check for full bowl and freedom, check heading indicator. Allow 5 minutes for directional gyro to spin up, set to known heading while taxing. Always check setting when lined up for take off.
Attitude Indicator – Allow for spin up, horizon bar should erect to the horizontal position and remain at the correct position.
Altimeter – Check for within 75 feet of elevation , may vary because of difference between location and published field elevation.
Vertical Speed Indicator – Should read zero if not, note error and interpret zero position in flight.
Radios – Set and tune all radios to frequencies needed before take off. Tower and departure on top radio. Nav frequency and radial set.
Carb Heat – Checked and Pitot heat on if O.A.T. below 10 degree C.
Taxiing
Turn Coordinator – Miniature airplane should turn in direction of turn. Ball opposite of turn.
Heading Indicator – Should turn Smoothly and runway heading when lined up for take off.
Attitude Indicator – Horizon bar should remain horizontal during taxi.
Approach
Tune and identify all radios set inbound course.
Brief – Initial approach Altitude. Decision height or MDA. Time to both missed approach.
